The statement of CU-Boulder Chancellor Phil DiStefano:
The judge's decision today is a victory for faculty governance. It reinforces the idea that faculty set the standard for academic integrity on our campus and all campuses across the country. His decision reinforces the notion that faculty establish research standards, abide by them and enforce them. The judge elected not to expose us to a double standard. Professor Churchill was found to have committed research misconduct by a number of committees. The judge recognizes that we cannot hold one faculty member to a different standard than we hold the rest of the faculty and the students. To have that double standard would have been very harmful to the campus. This is not an issue about free speech or about academic freedom. This is an issue about research misconduct. I said back in 2005 and again in 2006 that Professor Churchill's speech is protected. However, there were numerous allegations of research misconduct that needed to be investigated and we did so. A number of faculty committees reached a consensus there was research misconduct.
Another interesting tidbit. Since Judge Naves vacated the $1 jury verdict, Lane gets no attorneys fees.

Also, Churchill will have to pay C.U.'s costs.
Amy - 07 July '09 - 17:57
Where do you see that, Amy?

A lawyer friend told me, someone who practices in this area of law.

I'm sceptical, Amy. More evidence, please.

I watched the entire DiStefano/O'Rourke press conference on one of the tv stations' websites. A reporter asked about CU's total cost for the entire Churchill saga. O'Rourke said they were working on getting a total together and mentioned that the university was self-insured, i.e. they periodically put some money aside to defend against lawsuits. He pointed out that the two CU lawyers were on salary, but that there was still considerable cost for witnesses. If Churchill was going to have to reimburse CU for the trial, I think that O'Rourke would have mentioned it.

does anyone happen to know what 2009 undergraduate tuition is, what dorm prices are, and/or what fraction of the budget is state supported?

UC-BOULDER BUDGET

Depending how acctg is .. $80MM .. either 8% or 16%
OMG! Numbers being used! They're racist/sexist/homophobic, y'know.

hmm. So it clearly is more effectively private lately. But that goes both ways. A private school has more grounds for making its own hiring decisions (only accepting catholics etc), but the public nature of the school is both what brought about complaints and made it illegal for the university to not follow the regulations.
- Anyway, what is up with dorm rooms over $1000/month? Couldn't you get a luxury apartment in Denver for that price? Yes, they have cooks and janitors, but you see a lot more visible academic staff who get paid more, and academic buildings have janitors and staff too. In 2000 I was paying $3000 tuition and $250 rent, which is possible without taking out a loan. Have wages doubled? The students probably won't have jobs to pay the loans when they graduate. http://www.colorado.edu/prospective/freshman/finances/resident.html

real quickly: colleges try to break-even on housing -- and are very inefficient. Look how much has been WASTED on FAKE INDIAN.

On craigslist, there are a lot of administrative assistant jobs for $10. I have friends making $20k/y as social workers, a difficult job. You would need to get cheaper rooms after college than in college. At $7500k, if you skip a lecture, that is nearly $20.

Chloe,
I paid my daughter's tuition, room and board. Tuition was over $3000 PER SEMESTER. She lived in the dorm during her freshman year, which was also over $3000. She had to eat and buy books, clothes and supplies. She lived in her sorority house for three years, which cost just a little more than the dorm but her meals were provided. We paid over $13,000 per year. How did you get by with $3000 tuition, $250 per month rent and did you eat?

Caveat: Many news links cease to function after a week or two; generally, a search of that news source's archives will re-discover the news story you are seeking. Happy hunting.
