CU's Standing Committee on Research Misconduct has made its recommendations to the provost. SCRM voted 6-3 to recommend Churchill's dismissal, with the minority voting to recommend suspension.
Excerpt from the Executive Summary (emphasis ours):
The Standing Committee on Research Misconduct at the University of Colorado at Boulder has accepted the conclusions of the Investigative Committee that Professor Ward Churchill has committed serious, repeated, and deliberate research misconduct. After reviewing the Investigative Committee’s report and Professor Churchill’s response, the Standing Committee is recommending to the University’s Provost and Dean of Arts and Sciences a set of corrective, disciplinary, and policy changes.

With regard to corrective actions, the Standing Committee is recommending that publishers of the articles, chapters, and books in which falsification, fabrication, or plagiarism were found be informed of the Investigative Committee report. Although there may be no opportunity to publish errata or corrections in most cases, the Standing Committee hopes that the publishers takes appropriate steps to respond to the Investigative Committee’s findings.

The Standing Committee did not reach, or seek, consensus with regard to disciplinary actions. Six of the voting members recommended dismissal from the University. Three members recommended suspension without pay; two of these recommended suspension for five years and one recommended suspension for two years.

The Standing Committee also made three key policy recommendations, based on information uncovered in this investigation. One recommendation was aimed at ensuring campus-wide compliance with existing policies and procedures regarding academic standards. A second made similar recommendations with regard to consistency of hiring and promotion practices. The third recommendation called for support by campus administrators for members of the campus community who have been negatively affected by the investigation, and for the key principles of academic freedom and academic integrity.
...and Churchill's first response (via the Denver Post, ht jgm over at Drunkablog, see below for his full response):
"Baloney. That's my one-word-response," he said. "The basic situation here is there was a call ... for my termination clear back last February, whether or not it was legal. They're willing to take the heat and go to court if necessary and stand behind an illegitimate investigation."
...and while the Rocky Mountain News was unable to get even a one-word-response from Churchill or his legal sock-puppet, it does report on what's next:
The recommendation from the Standing Committee on Research Misconduct will now be sent to interim provost Susan Avery and Todd Gleeson, dean of the college of arts and sciences.

Avery and Gleeson then will make separate recommendations to interim Chancellor Phil DiStefano, who will have the final say on whether Churchill should be fired.

An exact timeline for that decision has not been determined, but could come within weeks.

UPDATE: The RMN link above no longer works; here's a newer article that covers pretty much the same info:

The vote marks the first time CU's Standing Committee on Research Misconduct has found a colleague guilty since the panel was created 17 years ago.

It also increases the likelihood that Churchill will be fired.

Interim Chancellor Phil DiStefano, who has the final say on Churchill's fate, is expected to announce his decision in the next few weeks.

He'll first consult with Provost Susan Avery and arts and sciences Dean Todd Gleeson, who received copies of the panel's 20-page report Tuesday.

Neither Churchill nor his lawyer are holding their breath, attorney David Lane said.

...and, of course, Churchill publishes his full response on his favorite scholarly website
Here's an excerpt, straight from Bizarro World:

This process has not demonstrated that I engaged in any serious research misconduct but that, after more than a year of painstaking review, those charged with firing me could find nothing more than a few footnotes and questions of attribution to quibble over.
NB: for those with short memories, here's our look at those quibbles about a "few footnotes and questions of attribution" as well as a look at the number of "scholarly works" by others that will have to be revised (provided the authors of those works have any integrity).

Woo-freakin'-hoo, dude. Congratulations to you and to the people at CU who got one right.

To quote some entertainer or other, "Is everybody HAPPY?"

  — jgm () (URL) - 13 June '06 - 17:59
Altogether excellent news. Predictable that he "questions the timing" as a senator might say, but it's his own fault for being a fraud to being with.

You can either be quietly phony or loudly honest, but loud and phony will always bring trouble eventually.

Now we can start on the quiet phonies.

Yes, Churchill is getting 86ed from the U. and he deserves to go. That does not mean, however, that American Indians did not get historically shit-sticked by this great nation...

  — Anothabrotha - 13 June '06 - 20:33
No, Anothabrotha, it just means that Churchill has lied about it. Repeatedly.

The RMN article that is going to tell what is next is not showing up.

  — Bragg - 14 June '06 - 07:07
"Is everybody happy?" No, as a CU alumni and as an academic I am not. This whole sorrid affair has besmirched CU's academic reputation in general and its reputation in the Humanities specifically. My academic career is built upon the reputation of my work and the institutions I have studied and worked at. Ward Churchill's complete unprofessionalism has seriously damaged CU's reputation, the reputation of my alma mater. Since this controversy erupted I have constantly been asked "what the hell is going on there?" and "has Colorado always been this bad?" These questions have been coming from fellow academics and administrators. (I am on the East Coast) Even the administrative assistants have asked me what is going on with my alma mater. Sending out a c. vita with CU on it for a job in the humanities is not going to be very helpful for quite a while. The majority of Churchill's defenders in Academia are ideologues. The vast majority of academics involved in hiring are not ideologues. When the SCRM writes about the seriousness of the academic misconduct Ward Churchill has committed and its impact the committee is dead on. Six recommended firing, two for a five-year suspension without pay (on a practical level the equivalent of a firing), and only one for a two-year suspension without pay. That is a brutal recommendation given that these type of committees are always looking for a quiet resolution in order to protect the institution's reputation. Unfortunately in this case it is going to take years for CU's reputation to be repaired from the damage Churchill has created. More years than I have in this business. I did not spend years in kitchens working my way through CU and later graduate school to have a phoney political hack like Ward Churchill trash the reputation of my alma mater and by extension besmirch the reputation of my education. No, I am not happy. I am furious! There needs to be some serious self-evaluation at CU. To be blunt: Ward Churchill was hired as a PC reaction to the Sand Creek Massacre protests 120+ years after the event. He was then fast tracked through the tenure process so the administration could show "progress" by hiring an "authentic" Native American and promoting him. Well act in haste, repent in leisure. The only problem is those that acted in haste are mostly gone and it is the graduates, current students and faculty, and people of Colorado who get to repent in leisure. And Ward Churchill, he'll just turn himself into a poster boy of the repressed left done in by the "right wing" and make money on the lecture circuit. This is not a recipe that makes me happy it just makes me want to puke.

Hand me the bucket, Rex. And I still have one year of tuition, room and board to fork out.

  — Laurie - 15 June '06 - 10:29
I'm a physician and you're certainly correct about my view of U- C's humanities dept. They seem to function as sinecures of political correctness for people who aren't too bright. An economist made the point closing every dept. which has the term "studies" would probably benefit the university
