PB is in possession of a four-page "response to a press inquiry" dated 2/18/05 purportedly by Dr. M. Anne Jaimes, one of Ward Churchill's ex-wives, and with whom he collaborated on numerous books and articles
(pdf files: page 1, page 2, page 3, page 4)
(now available: transcription of all four pages)
Excerpt from page 3:
"However, I eventually came to feel my ideas and work were being appropriated for [Churchill's] own personal agenda, which is to sell his repetitious books, and to become another hollow media icon with hefty honorariums for his speaking engagements."
and another from page 3:
"He does have a master's degree in communications and a probable minor in psychology, which is indicative of his hyperbolic and incendiary style, and with apoplectic fits if he is defied; to say he is a "control freak" is putting it mildly."
[editor's note: we cannot vouch for the provenance of these documents, nor can we attest to their authenticity. Also, we have been unable to find other occurrences of these documents or the text contained therein on the internet.]
[Update 16Mar05: A Denver Post article appears to vouch for the authenticity and source of these documents. It seems odd that The Post appears to have had these documents in hand since mid-February, but failed to report on them until March 16th--two days after we had released them.]
"[editor's note: we cannot vouch for the provenance of these documents, nor can we attest to their authenticity. We have been unable to find any other occurrence of these documents anywhere else on the internet.]" In other words, if they were about George Bush they'd be the first thing mentioned on the next 60 Minutes, right?

LOL. Not by us. We like to think our integrity is just a tad better than Rather's.

These days, at San Francisco State, she goes by Mariannette Jaimes Guerrero. So M. Anne Jaimes doesn't really make sense. Let me futz around a little with some of State's people.
Dianna () - 13 March '05 - 19:07
Sorry, she's an associate professor of women's studies, using MA Jaimes Guerrero.
Does anyone know where she got her degrees? Any degrees?
Dianna () - 13 March '05 - 19:51
Dianna,
I find it interesting that there is no public mention of her degrees. SFSU doesn't reveal that unimportant information on its website. Nor can I find any mention of her degrees online.
Sarah D. () - 13 March '05 - 20:51
She appears to have earned her Doctorate in Education from Arizona State University in 1990. Here's the abstract of her dissertation--just as it is noted in the "response to news inquiries". http://coe.asu.edu/cie/diss.html --> just load the page and search for "jaimes"
jwpaine () - 13 March '05 - 20:55
Yes, Sarah, I'd noticed that, and I put it down to my own incompetence - I thought I'd just missed something, but I don't recall finding her degrees. Odd.
Now, SFSU isn't exactly top flight, but I find it odd that there's no mention of her degrees. On the other hand, the only woman teaching in women's studies who lists her degrees is the sub-continental Indian woman (MA & PHD from Rochester). What we're supposed to make of this, I have no idea.
Dianna () - 13 March '05 - 21:01
Other departments at SFSU do list a curriculum vitae. I guess it's up to the department.
Sarah D. () - 13 March '05 - 21:08
My SWAG is that somebody important wasn't as degreed as they ought to be, so the PC way to deal with it was to omit degrees entirely. I'm starting to wonder just how exclusive Ethnic Studies faculties really are.
jwpaine () - 13 March '05 - 21:09
It seems to me that if Dr. Jaimes is the author of this, she needs to retake freshman English and learn to write a paragraph. How is it possible that she has a Ph.D.? Here are the spelling errors I picked up:
occassionally
liason
co-habitation
stillo
cronically
co-existance
Strausberg
arguements
de-program
prefered
re-publish
egomanic
chauvenistic
disengenuous
Nevertheless, some of what she has to say is revealing of Churchill's character. Sadly, similar to her former husband, she appears to be lacking the scholarly skills to be a tenured professor.

"Im STARTING to wonder just how exclusive Ethnic Studies faculties really are."
Starting? You are too kind. As per Dennis the Peasant, we are all minorities now, and it is our birthright as oppressed citizenry of Amerika to be able to claim some identity politic based position based solely upon our own perceived ethnic identity.
The Michael Lopez-Calderon link (great link BTW) you posted has a more scholarly explanation of the details, but Dennis is more fun to read.
Terry - 13 March '05 - 22:31
Looking at her publishing record shows that "MA Jaimes" has been working minor variations on her name for years, adding the Guerrero out of nowhere, including or excluding the Maria as she sees fit, and switching between Annette and Anne. So this in itself says little about the document's authenticity. Why not just phone her and ask her if she wrote it or not? If she declines to answer, the posted document has a signature that one could compare with FOIA-able records in CA. You could also look at her dissertation, which will have her signature on the title page.

Caveat: Many news links cease to function after a week or two; generally, a search of that news source's archives will re-discover the news story you are seeking. Happy hunting.
