We provide here a genealogy for Ward L. Churchill (thanks to wtc394 for all his hard work!)
For extra points, Spot the Indian.
Okay, we know most of our readers won't even try for the extra points; they just want the bottom line, so here it is: Ward Churchill has no Indian ancestors, at least back to the late 1700s (we have to-date four complete white generations on Churchill's mother's side (an Indian ancestor beyond that would result in, at best, a 1/32nd Indian blood quantum), three complete white generations on his father's side (an Indian ancestor beyond that would result in, at best, a 1/16th Indian blood quantum).
We also found no link between Ward Churchill and Joshua Tyner (a Revolutionary War soldier who Churchill alleges is Indian and a blood relative). We used ancestry.com and other reputable genealogical sites to do our research. Over the next few days, we'll have links to images of the actual US census pages we used to connnect the genealogical dots.
In any case, for the casual reader, here is the genealogy in PDF format....
Or for the serious researchers, here it is the genealogy in FTW format (Family Tree Maker) and the ever-popular GEDCOM format (must be downloaded; cannot be viewed using a browser)
An excellent and well-documented genealogy (with some interesting footnotes concerning Joshua Tyner) by Jack Ott is available at his website. We heartily recommend taking a look.
Great care and effort went into the preparation of this genealogy, but mistakes can happen. We invite commentary and input from genealogical researchers. Please report all errors/corrections in the genealogy to: firstname.lastname@example.org
Update: As we note here, evidence exists that Churchill is related to former President George W. Bush.
